Today, Her Worship the Lord Mayor, Hon. Rohey Malick Lowe, officially launched the Urban Youth-Led Cleaning System Project, delivered in partnership with REFELA and other committed partners who share our vision for a cleaner, safer, and more resilient capital. This ceremony marks a significant stride under the Banjul Safe City Project, a long-term effort to enhance the cityโ€™s hygienic standards, uplift communities, and strengthen our collective commitment to public health and responsible waste management.
The initiative brings together the energy and dedication of our young people, who will be working daily across Banjulโ€™s streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces, sweeping, transporting refuse with tricycles, conducting awareness campaigns, and supporting the sanitation system in ways that directly improve the living conditions of residents. These youths will form the backbone of a cleaner city, serving as ambassadors of discipline, teamwork, and civic responsibility as they lead community-focused sanitation efforts throughout all wards.
At this initial phase, 70 youths have been engaged, with the number set to double in the coming two months as operations expand and more zones come under the program. Her Worship expressed deep appreciation to the management and staff of the Banjul City Council for their continuous support, and extended heartfelt gratitude to the Deputy Mayor, Hon. Aziz Dabakh Gaye, whose time, commitment, and leadership have been invaluable in shaping and driving this project from inception to launch.
To the selected youths, Banjul is counting on you. Your city has entrusted you with a responsibility that carries both honor and expectation. We believe you will approach this work with seriousness, pride, and determination, setting the tone for the cleaner and safer Banjul we all aspire to see.
As residents, institutions, and communities, we must take ownership of this initiative, invest our collective effort, and support its growth. Building a clean city is a shared duty and together, we will uphold this vision with purpose and unity.
