Today, the Banjul City Council successfully carried out a major general cleansing exercise across the commercial heart of our city from Albert Market through to GPA.
This activity, the first under the newly established Environmental, Sanitation, Health and Mbalit Committee, demonstrated our Council’s firm commitment to tackling waste, restoring order, and safeguarding public health. We take our responsibility to Banjulians seriously, and this exercise is proof of that.
More than 70 youth volunteers from our communities joined the effort and were duly compensated for their service. Additional equipment and protective gear were procured to ensure the exercise was conducted effectively and safely. The Council’s own security personnel and the Cleansing Service staff worked side by side with the volunteers to deliver a thorough and impactful exercise.
It was also good to meet our partners from the Gambia Armed Forces and the Gambia Immigration Department on the ground always ready to lend their support in anything positive for our city. Partners like the Red Cross and the NDMA were also actively involved, further strengthening the collective effort.
The Deputy Mayor, Hon. Abdou Aziz Dabakh Gaye, together with Councillors Hon. Cllr. Tunko Jammeh (Chairman of the Committee), Hon. Cllr. Pa Mamud Ceesay, Hon. Cllr. Sheikh Jaw, Hon. Cllr. Ebou Sarr, and other honorable members of Council all joined in and led the exercise, working alongside the teams and reaffirming Council’s commitment to this cause.
This is only the beginning. As resolved by the General Council, cleansing exercises will now take place monthly, fully funded and coordinated through Ward Councillors and under the leadership of the Environmental, Sanitation, Health and Mbalit Committee.
The Banjul City Council will continue to lead with action ensuring our city remains clean, healthy, and dignified for all.
