The Banjul City Council (BCC), under the leadership of Lord Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe, has, as is customary each year, disbursed over One Million Dalasis (D1,000,000) in scholarships in 2025 alone so far demonstrating its unwavering commitment to expanding educational access and uplifting the youth of the capital.
Beneficiaries of the scholarship programme include students from the University of The Gambia (UTG), the Gambia Law School, senior secondary schools, TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) centres, and other accredited institutions. These funds have supported tuition fees, registration costs, and other academic expenses providing vital relief to many families and enabling students to pursue their studies uninterrupted.
Importantly, all scholarship applications undergo thorough review and vetting by an independent scholarship board established by the Council. This ensures transparency, fairness, and that the most deserving students particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds receive the support.
As part of its continued commitment, the Council has already budgeted an additional One Million, Three Hundred and Ten Thousand Dalasis (D1,310,000) to expand the scholarship initiative before the year ends. This supplementary allocation brings the total scholarship budget to Two Million, Three Hundred and Ten Thousand Dalasis (D2,310,000) for 2025. It is expected to accommodate a larger pool of students, including those enrolled in vocational training centres, technical institutes, and non-formal education programmes.
The scholarship programme forms part of BCC’s broader vision to invest in human capital, promote inclusive development, and empower the next generation of leaders. The Council remains in active collaboration with schools, guardians, community stakeholders, and local institutions to ensure this vital support reaches those who need it most.
Disbursements were made directly to institutions, including the University of The Gambia, the Gambia Law School, GTTI, TVET centres, and numerous public and private high schools within Banjul and its environs.
The Banjul City Council urges all interested students and guardians to follow official communication channels for updates on future application windows, eligibility criteria, and further announcements.
