The Banjul City Council (BCC) received a delegation from the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) in a courtesy visit today, as part of preparations for the King’s Baton Relay 2025, which will be hosted in Banjul tomorrow, 15th October 2025. The delegation was received by the Deputy Mayor of Banjul, Hon. Abdou Aziz Dabakh Gaye, on behalf of the Lord Mayoress, Her Worship Rohey Malick Lowe, in the presence of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Modou Jonga, as well as the Director of Finance and Director of Audit of the Council.
The discussions focused on logistics, coordination, and ceremonial arrangements for the event, which will begin at The Arch, a historic landmark in Banjul. The King’s Baton Relay, a celebrated feature of the Commonwealth Games, travels across all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories as a symbol of unity, peace, and shared purpose, and the 2025 relay marks The Gambia’s participation ahead of the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, 2026.
Earlier activities in The Gambia included a press briefing at Olympic House in Bakau on 9th October, followed by baton ceremonies and handovers to the Minister of Youth and Sports and H.E. the President on 13th and 14th October. Tomorrow, the official celebration and relay will commence at The Arch, bringing together dignitaries, athletes, and schoolchildren in a symbolic ceremony, before continuing through Kanifing Municipality with engagement of community groups, students, environmental organizations, and national institutions.
